Description
No. 9 Abbey Green is a house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It dates from the mid-18th century, likely part of the development by the Duke of Kingston's estate between 1758 and 1760, and was altered in the early 20th century. The building was designed by Thomas Jelly and is constructed from Bath limestone ashlar, which is painted on the ground floor, with a pantile roof.
The house features an unusually tall elevation, standing significantly higher than other buildings on Abbey Green. It has four storeys and three windows. The ground floor includes an early 20th-century timber shop front, with a three-pane window to the left and a one-pane window to the right of the door. The upper windows are all six-over-six sash windows set in plain reveals, with the second-floor windows being smaller. There is a cornice with cyma recta modillions and a blocking course, a plain roof, and an ashlar stack on the left side of the ridge. The rear wing, visible to the right, also has a stack with a pot and a six-over-six sash window.
The interior has not been inspected. The height of the building and the ashlar front suggest that it has been re-fronted at some point. It was one of the properties sold during the Kingston/Manvers Estate sale in 1874.
