Description
Harington House, now offices, was probably built between 1758 and 1760, with alterations around 1794 and in the late 18th century. A cleaning and restoration took place in 1994. The building is constructed of Bath limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and comprises three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a width of four windows. The front of the building is set slightly forward on either side, but it lacks quoin pilasters. The left-hand side of the ground floor features a doorway with sidelights set in a Venetian-style surround, which incorporates Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature and a central pediment. Two windows are located to the right of the doorway. The basement has four six/six sash windows. A platband runs at first-floor level, and a sill band is present below the first-floor windows. All windows are late 19th-century plate glass sashes set in plain reveals. A modillion cornice sits above the windows, topped by a parapet and a mansard roof with two flat-topped dormers. Six/six sashes are found in the dormers, with the right-hand one being paired. Rubble end stacks are topped with pots. The interior has not been inspected. Wrought iron area railings are a subsidiary feature. The building plot was leased by Thomas Attwood in 1743, and his family retained control of the house. It is believed to have been built by Jelly as part of the rebuilding of Abbey Street for the Duke of Kingston's Estate. The doorway appears late 18th century and may date from a refurbishment following a letting recorded in 1794.
