Description

No. 9 York Street is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1815. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a roof that is not visible from the street. It has a single depth plan, backing onto No. 1 Abbey Street.

The exterior consists of three storeys with three windows facing York Street and one window on the splayed corner, while there are no windows above the ground floor on Abbey Street. The windows have chamfered reveals and are all late 19th century plate glass plain sashes. A platband runs along the first floor. The entrance door has six flush panels, and there is a plain shopfront on the corner with an entrance in the splay, featuring a part-glazed door with a rectangular light above. There is a mid-19th century two by two shop window facing Abbey Street and a plain plate glass window on York Street, with one six-over-six sash window on the left. The building is topped with a cornice and a parapet, and a plain tall ashlar stack rises the full height of the gable wall of No. 1 Abbey Street, without pots.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, York Street was created from Stall Street in 1806, leading to the demolition of the house north of No. 1 Abbey Street, after which this narrow site was redeveloped. It housed Hand's Dairy, as indicated by a surviving painted sign on the first floor, from around 1850. The canted corner design reflects the Regency improvement scheme's aim to bring order to what was previously a disorganized area.
