Description

This is a row of five purpose-built blocks of flats located at 11-15 Grove Street, constructed around 1880 by Wallace Gill. The buildings are of group value. They are built of machine-cut, randomly sized limestone ashlar with slate roofs and diagonally-set moulded brick stacks on the party walls. Each block is three storeys high with a cellar, and each unit has a symmetrical four-window facade. A continuous coped parapet runs along the top, with first and ground floor platbands and a plinth below. Most windows are two-over-two pane sash windows. The two-window central entrance ranges are slightly set forward, topped with small pediments, and have one window to each side. Cornices at ground floor platband level of the central ranges project outwards to form semicircular arches over stilted fanlights. The fanlights are sheltered by hoods supported on shaped brackets, and are located above four-panel doors flanked by paired windows. The interiors have not been inspected.
