Description

House on the north corner of Brock Street and the Circus, built between 1754 and 1759 and altered in the 19th century. It was designed by John Wood the Elder and completed by John Wood the Younger. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar with a hipped slate mansard roof and moulded stacks to the party walls. The plan is of a double depth.

The exterior is three storeys with an attic and basement, featuring a five-window range. The right return, which forms the left terminal of numbers 19-30 Circus, has the most elaborate facade. This is enriched with superimposed orders of Roman Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian paired engaged columns supporting their respective entablatures, and topped by a moulded coped parapet with piers over the columns and horizontal ovals over the windows. A triglyph frieze to the ground floor is embellished with carved motifs. The Brock Street entrance facade is symmetrical, with a three-window range, and steps slightly forward on the right. The cornices return, and the parapet sweeps down to the second-floor cornice. The six/six-pane sash windows have moulded architraves; those on the centre and first floor, left have lowered sills and nine/nine panes. A central projecting doorcase features a cornice, triglyph frieze, and blocking course supported by freestanding Tuscan columns. A late 19th-century two-panel door and plain overlight are present. In the angle of the stepped-forward corner is a lead bell-headed downpipe. The interior has not been inspected.
