Description

This is a house, dating from approximately 1777 to 1784, with alterations made in the 19th century. It was designed by John Wood the Younger and is now divided into flats. The front of the house is constructed of limestone ashlar, while the rear uses a combination of ashlar and rubble. It has a double-pile mansard roof covered with Welsh slate, with coped party walls incorporating ashlar stacks. The front stacks have some early clay pots that are shared with numbers 3 and 1 Catharine Place.

The house is L-shaped and interconnects with number 1 Catharine Place. It has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a six-bay front and a two-bay rear. The front has a six-window range. The first floor features six plate glass sash windows set within splayed, ovolo-moulded architraves, friezes, cornices and console brackets supporting stone sills. The second floor mirrors this design. The ground floor also has six sash windows with wrought iron balconettes, and a central eight-panel door with a single glazed panel, a cast iron lion’s mask knocker, and a stone doorcase with a cyma moulded architrave and moulded cornice on console brackets, forming a hood. The basement has four sash windows and a half-glazed door, with a pennant-paved bridge leading to an area to the left. Double dormers are located in the roof. A band course runs above the ground floor, and there is a modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. A lead hopperhead and downpipe are shared with number 1 Catharine Place. The rear elevation includes an ashlar extension and paired sash windows.

An inspection by Bath Council in 1979 revealed elaborate cornices and mouldings in the front ground floor room, as well as a central sideboard alcove with an elliptical arch and plastered soffits.

Attached to the house are wrought iron railings and a gate with shaped heads on limestone bases.
