Description
The Hedger monument, located east of the chancel of the Church of St Thomas a Becket on Church Street in Widcombe, is a Grade II listed catafalque tomb dedicated to Matilda Maria Hedger, who died in 1825, and her sisters. Made of limestone, the small catafalque features steeply canted sides and rests on four plain stone blocks, set on a double platform. The low pyramidal top has sunk edge panels, and the inscription panels include incised margins. The east end commemorates Frances Hedger, who was 52 years old, while the main inscriptions honor three young children: Matilda, who died at the age of 10, John, who lived for 1 month, both in 1825, and Elizabeth, who lived for 13 days in 1827. The monument is situated at plot 215.
