Description

The fountain at Widcombe Manor House is a garden feature that is believed to be a late 19th-century copy of a 15th-century fountain. It is made of bronze and limestone. Originally, four cherubs were part of the fountain, but they were stolen and replaced with bronze copies from a similar fountain in Tetbury. The design includes a small bronze figure on a shell that rises from the higher of two shallow basins. This is supported by a central baluster in a Rococo style, which features four small mermaids and is set on four turtles as feet. The fountain is placed on a square stone block that is centered in a circular pool, approximately 3 meters in diameter, surrounded by a raised stone curb containing a narrow cobbled band of paving. It is located in front of the south side of the Manor House, with steps and stone balustrading to the west. The fountain was likely installed as part of a garden redesign by Rolfe and Peto in 1928, as indicated by drawings in the Royal Institute of British Architects. Photographs show the previous garden layout without the fountain.
