Description
The gate piers, gates, and boundary walls to the south of Widcombe Manor were built around 1727 and are made of ashlar stone. They are positioned on the central axis of the Manor's south front and feature a fine pair of wrought iron gates with slender divided dogbars and spearhead rails on a concave gatehead. These gates are hung on large square rusticated piers with moulded bases, although much of the detail is obscured by a later rise in the road surface. The piers have moulded cappings that support heraldic beasts with castellated crowns, and on the inner face of the right-hand pier, there is a cast iron cage with a bell.
On either side of the gates, there are short quadrants of low ashlar walls topped with railings and finished with square capped piers. To the right, the boundary wall rises to approximately 2 to 2.5 meters high and features two small steps leading back to the southeast corner of the Manor House front. To the left, the boundary wall runs alongside the road and returns into the gardens, forming part of the balustrade to the west of the forecourt.
