Description
The summerhouse in the garden of No. 20 Lansdown Crescent is a miniature Islamic-style structure built around 1825. It is likely designed by H.E. Goodridge and constructed by William Beckford, who may have contributed to the design as well. The building is made of Bath stone and has a square plan, featuring a cornice, blocking course, and a semicircular dome. The door and window openings have trefoiled heads, and the windows are fitted with stone grills.
Historically, Beckford moved to No. 20 shortly after leaving Fonthill in 1822 and resided there until just before his death in 1844. During this time, Goodridge was also designing Lansdown Tower for him. While the summerhouse is of significant interest, it has undergone some reconstruction.
