Description

Compton Cottage is a farmhouse dated 1656, as indicated by internal plasterwork, and was remodelled and restored in the 1970s and 1980s. The building is constructed of rubble and features a double Roman tiled roof. It has two storeys and three windows, which are 20th-century two-light casements. There is a central 20th-century porch and a gabled extension to the east, along with a further extension at the west end.

Inside, the cottage boasts deeply chamfered beams with step and run-out stops. The east room features an ovolo moulded lintel above the fireplace and an impressive plaster overmantel decorated with strapwork, roses, quatrefoils, a central shield, initials, and the date: IA/E 1656. This cottage is noted primarily for its interior details.
