Description
The monument to Sir Bevil Grenville was erected in 1720 to honor the Royalist leader who was killed at the Battle of Lansdown on July 5th, 1643. It is constructed of ashlar and is square in shape, standing approximately 25 feet high in two stages. The lower stage features a moulded plinth and is rusticated, displaying a slate tablet inscribed with a quotation from Lord Clarendon's account of the battle. The upper stage is topped with a bold egg and dart moulded cornice and a moulded cap, surmounted by a griffin holding a Grenville shield. This stage also includes sunken slate tablets on two faces and relief carvings of Grenville heraldry and trophies on the other two faces. The monument is scheduled as an Ancient Monument, listed as Avon County No. 150. It underwent restoration in the early to mid-19th century by E. Davis of Bath and again in the 1970s to 1980s.
