Description

Keynsham Abbey remains are located to the south of Number 3 Abbey Park. The abbey was founded around 1170 for Augustinian Canons and was dissolved in 1539, with materials from the site later used to build the Bridges' mansion. The standing remains are made of finely dressed ashlar and include architectural details such as late 12th century bases. They consist of the lower parts of the south transept of the Abbey Church and adjoining sections of the south aisle. Some exposed sections of the nave and parts of monastic buildings, including the Chapter House, are also present. After the Dissolution, the site was occupied by a house built by the Bridges family, which was demolished in 1776. Many fragments from the abbey can be found throughout Keynsham, with most having been rescued and stored as museum pieces at the Town Hall. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
