Description
The River Chew Bridge is a Grade II listed structure made of pennant stone, featuring squared and coursed stone on the faces and soffit, with ashlar used for the voussoirs, quoins, string course, and copings, all finished with raised tooling and a plain margin.
Both sides of the bridge are identical, showcasing a 30-foot (9-meter) semi-circular arch with chamfered voussoirs that extend down the abutments to the ground, reaching 31 feet from the water level to the crown of the soffit. The arch is flanked by broad single-stage buttresses that are finished with offsets. Beyond these buttresses, the elevations continue as straight wing walls that run parallel to the trackbed. A string course, moulded with an arris, runs the full width of each wing wall and merges with the top of the buttress offsets. Above this is a parapet, with the wing walls and parapets terminating in square piers. The piers and parapet are connected by coping that is cut on the external face to a bold arris.
Post-war, galvanised steel railings with a round section have been mounted above the coping on both sides, which are not considered of interest.
