Description
The Parish Church of St Peter is a church that dates from the 15th century, with additions and restorations from the 17th, 18th, and a significant restoration around 1858-59, likely by C.E. Davis of Bath. The west tower is from the 15th century, while the nave features a north aisle added in 1736, a south porch, a north chancel chapel from around 1800, and a chancel completed in 1859. The church is constructed of ashlar and coursed, squared rubble for the chancel, and has Cotswold stone slate roofs.
The west tower is in the Perpendicular style and consists of three stages, with diagonal buttresses that have stepped set-offs, an embattled parapet with pinnacles, and single-light openings for the bell chamber. The nave and aisle also have an embattled parapet, and the nave features 19th-century Y-tracery windows, while the north side has tall mullioned two-light windows with ogee tops. The south porch is gabled.
Inside, the church has quatrefoil piers supporting an arcade with depressed segmental arches, and a double squint with age heads. There are several 18th and 19th-century wall tablets, particularly over the south door and in the north aisle, commemorating individuals such as Elizabeth Still (1748), Honor Cooper (1753), and Henry Fisher (1760). Additionally, there is a C14th/C15th octagonal font.
