Description

Kelso Villa, formerly the Superintendent's House of the Bath Gas Works, is a house built between 1858 and 1859 by Manners and Gill. It is now used as offices. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a T-shaped plan with a short wing extending to the right.

The exterior consists of three storeys and a basement, with two windows facing the street. The corners are rusticated, while the rest of the façade is smooth ashlar. The ground floor has arched windows set in arched and keyed recesses. The first floor features segmentally headed windows with eared architraves, and the second floor has a single window matching the others. The entrance is located in the right wing and consists of an arched six-panel door. The left return wall has a blind with two large stacks and a corbel table at the eaves. The rear elevation is gabled and has the same window treatment as the front.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the Bath Directory for 1858 mentions T Gill as the Chairman of Directors of the Gas Company, which may indicate a connection to the architect. This building is notably impressive for its type, reflecting the increasing prestige of utility companies and their aim to convey an image of solid respectability. It also has significant group value with the adjacent former offices of the Gas Company.
