Description

Westfield Cottage is a detached house with boundary walls, dating from the early 19th century and extended in the later 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with some dressed stonework and slate roofs. The original property served as a toll house and features a compact symmetrical hipped block with lower service wings to the left. It is situated at an acute angle formed by the intersection of Bloomfield Road and Englishcombe Lane.

The main front of the house, facing the garden, is two storeys high and has one plus two windows, all of which are twelve-pane sashes. This includes a window in a projecting balustraded bay on the right. The main two-window hipped range has a large central ashlar chimney stack. The wings to the left have a central valley leading to two smaller hipped outer ends, sharing common eaves and featuring an additional stack. The plain end facing Bloomfield Road has a later range with a hipped roof that is slightly set forward, a pointed window at the first floor, and a plank door in a pointed arch with a raised platform surround on the left. The rear wall has two pointed casements at each level and returns in coursed rubble, flush with the earlier wings.

The interior has not been inspected. A notable subsidiary feature on the Bloomfield Road front is a squared stone wall approximately 3 meters high with saddle back coping, which contains a door. This wall runs about 5 meters to the left with a horizontal top, then steps down and continues across the full width of the site, following the slope of the hill. To the right, a coped ashlar wall is brought forward as a 'prow' at the corner, returning approximately 3.5 meters high as the lower part of the wings, spanning the width of the site and featuring bold weathered coping.
