Description

This house, dating to around 1820, has been altered in approximately 1990 and is now divided into two dwellings. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof and has moulded stacks to the gable ends. The building has a double-depth plan with a projecting wing to the left. The symmetrical three-window front on the right-hand block is balanced by a single window on the left wing. A coped parapet tops the building, with a coved cornice, a frieze, and a platband defining the ground floor. The central first floor window on the right-hand block is blind. The windows are six-pane sashes with margin panes, and the window on the right has a cast iron balconette. Steps lead to a new entrance, replacing a former door, with six-panel doors flanked by windows with sliding louvred blinds. The wing to the left originally overlooked a carriage entrance leading to a rear courtyard and includes a granite wheel protector at the base of the former arch. Later, a shop was incorporated into the ground floor, and the wing now features a full-width timber lintel above a six/six-pane sash window on each floor. The interior has not been inspected. Historical records state that the house was once the residence of the owner of the brewery located opposite, at number 9.
