Description

This building is a stable, now used by a school, located about 30 metres southeast of The Manor House in Chew Magna. It has origins from the 18th century, with alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of sandstone rubble with limestone dressings and features a pantiled roof with raised coped verges and a gable stack on the right side.

The stable is two storeys high and has two windows. On the ground floor, there are two 19th-century four-pane windows and a central 20th-century door set in a formerly larger opening. To the right, there is a small pointed arched door with a 20th-century window inserted. The first floor has two keyed oculi.

On the right side, there is a 19th-century pointed arched door at the upper ground level. Attached to the stable is a rubble wall, approximately 4 metres high, which has coping and a four-centred arched door. This wall extends about 6 metres to the west, featuring a ball finial with acanthus leaves at the corner, and continues about 50 metres to the south. The wall ramps down in a north/south direction to central gate piers that are square and about 3 metres high, with a cornice and a banded ball finial on the stem. The gates are of 20th-century design and are not of special interest. The wall continues on an east/west axis for about 50 metres.
