Description

Highfield House is a house built between 1825 and 1840, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of rendered rubble, with slate roofs featuring deep eaves supported by paired brackets. The main facade has two storeys and three windows, all sash windows. A central Tuscan portico provides access to a heavy six-panelled door, flanked by sidelights of three panes each. The portico features a reeded architrave and a fanlight with decorative glazing bars. A plain frieze sits above a cornice, all resting on a plinth. The left return has a central two-storey bay with a central French window, a sash window with external shutters at first floor, and eight-pane sashes to the right and left. Ground and first-floor sash windows are also present to the right and left. The right return has a door with an overlight to the left, a sash window with a six-pane light to the right, and two sashes at first floor. A side elevation steps back twice, with a single-storey addition constructed of unrendered sandstone rubble, featuring a pointed arched door and window. The rear of the house includes three French windows, one with margin glazing, a glazed conservatory, and four sashes with external shutters on the first floor. A single-storey addition to the left has three sashes to the front and a matching French window to the side, topped with a parapet. The interior features panelled rooms on the ground floor, internal window shutters, and an entrance hall with a cantilevered stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade and a banded mahogany handrail. A dado rail and cornice are also present, along with fine panelled doors.
