Description
St Paul's Church Hall is a parish hall and church house, now used as a warehouse, built in 1889, possibly by C.E. Davis. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof and is located at the corner of St John's Place, with a short return to Monmouth Street.
The exterior showcases a florid Bath Baroque revival style, featuring a steep hipped roof and three storeys. The long front has a one+three+one window arrangement, with four/eight-pane sash windows on the second floor set in raised plat surrounds. These windows are topped with segmental pediments and a dentil cornice, and they rest on moulded sills with aprons. The end bays are slightly projected and contain modified sashes in sunk panels on moulded sills with scroll aprons, above which are channelled pilasters and scrolled panels that bear the inscriptions 'S PAUL'S PARISH HALL' and 'S PAUL'S CHURCH HOUSE' above a raised cartouche with a sunk shell center and a swagged frieze, which was above former doors in channelled masonry. The ground floor has 20th-century infill.
A broad platband runs above the first floor, with a cornice that is broken forward at the windows and pilasters, culminating in a blocking course. The short front features three bays, with a four-pane sash window on each side of a tripartite two:four:two pane window on the second floor, all in raised plat surrounds with segmental pediments on either side. The cornice above has a high raised segmental pediment adorned with swags and other embellishments, including a central date. The first floor has four deep eight-pane sash windows in raised plat surrounds, each under ornate scrolled pediments and resting on moulded sills supported by block brackets. The ground floor is plain, with a wide inserted door to the left and two blocked openings in the plinth. The quoins and central stepped forward bay are channelled, and the cornice features a blocking course with a parapet and end dies topped with urns. The interior has not been inspected.
