Description
Christchurch Cottages are two cottages built in 1856 to generate income for Christ Church, with 20th-century additions. They are likely designed by Thomas Fuller.
The cottages are constructed from limestone rubble with ashlar dressings on the front and left side, while the right side and rear are made of limestone ashlar. The roofs feature concrete tiles on the front and left sides, pantiles on the rear and inner slopes, and ashlar stacks on the gable ends of the rear wings.
Each cottage has an L-shaped plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys tall with an attic. They display a Tudorbethan style with two-window fronts. On the first floor, the left cottage (No.1) has a three-light timber casement window with horizontal glazing bars and shouldered heads in a splayed reveal, mirrored by a similar window on the right cottage (No.2). The ground floor of No.1 features a two-light window flanked by a single-light window, creating a quasi-bay window effect in the projecting gabled portion. No.2 has a three-light window and a plank door with a glazed panel and 19th-century ironmongery in a splayed reveal topped with a painted moulded head. The attic includes similar two-light windows in the gables and a gabled dormer on the right. The left cottage (No.1) has a projecting gabled centre that is corbelled out over the ground floor, with relieving arches above all openings, a triangular opening in the gable, and moulded coping. A datestone above the door to No.2 is inscribed ‘AD MDCCCLVI’, while the left side entrance front to No.1 features similar two-light windows, a single-light casement in the gabled dormer, and a similar plank door, with a datestone above the door inscribed ‘NISI DOMINU AD MDCCCLVI’. The rear and left sides are simpler in style, featuring 19th and 20th-century windows.
The interiors have not been inspected.
