Description

Nos. 1 and 2, Belvedere, originally two houses dating to the late 18th century, were later combined to form the Bath Eye Infirmary before conversion to flats. Further extensions were added in the mid-19th century, likely around 1861, and again in the 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs.

The irregular facade facing Belvedere has ten bays arranged as two:three:three:two. The two bays on the left are set slightly back, the next six bays form a semicircular bow, and the final two bays are a 19th-century extension related to the Eye Infirmary. The ground floor features six/six sash windows and a doorway with a six-panel door, rectangular overlight, and a Doric pedimented doorcase. A platband defines the first-floor level. The second floor has nine six/six sash windows, with a combined wrought-iron balcony over the first two and dropped sills below the next three. The upper windows are a mix of four/four and six/six sashes. A modillion cornice tops the facade, above which is a parapet. Visible roof sections include a gambrel with a single six/six flat-topped dormer over the left two bays and a half-gambrel over the bow, protected by a decorative cast iron railing. The right-hand extension has an additional attic storey, which is blank on the Belvedere elevation. Chimneys are located on the left-hand corner and between bays eight and nine. The basement has three plain sashes to the bow. The Montpelier elevation has four bays. The rear elevation is not visible.

The interior was not inspected. The building served as the Bath Eye Infirmary from around 1861 (No. 2) and 1895 (No. 1). The eye infirmary was established around 1811 and had previous locations in Bath Street and Bladud buildings.
