Description

This is a terrace house, now converted into flats, dating from approximately 1770 to 1776, with alterations made in the 20th century. The front facade is constructed of limestone ashlar, painted on the ground floor and basement, with a rear extension of rubble and ashlar. The roof is a mansard style with Welsh slate covering, and features two ashlar chimney stacks with some early clay pots, rising from a coped party wall.

The house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a single bay and a three-window front. The first floor has a window designed in a quasi-Venetian style, featuring a square-headed central light with four-pane, nine-pane, and four-pane sash windows in plain reveals. A large wrought iron balconette is supported by scrolled brackets. The second floor has three grouped plate glass horned sash windows, narrower on the left and right, in plain reveals with a continuous stone sill. The ground floor has a six-pane horned sash window to the left and a six-panel door with a plate glass overlight in a semicircular headed opening with an ovolo moulded architrave. A pennant paved crossover is flush with the pavement. The basement has two six-pane horned sash windows and a 20th-century plank door in an infilling under the crossover, alongside a plank door and an unglazed window opening that provides access to vaults. There is a double dormer window with two-pane sashes.

Architectural features include a band course above the ground floor, a sill band to the first floor which has been dressed back flush, a bracketed eaves cornice, and a coped parapet, all consistent with Nos. 1, 2, and 4 Montpelier. The rear elevation has a two-pane sash window with a stone sill and a wrought iron balconette to the second floor, alongside a parapeted ashlar extension leading to the staircase landing. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing assessment.

Attached to the property are wrought iron railings with shaped heads on limestone bases. The attached vaults are beneath a raised pennant pavement, with a simple wrought iron railing along the front edge, including an opening with four pennant steps leading down to the roadway. Two small openings provide further access to the roadway.
