Description
The high pavement, steps, and railings in front of Nos. 1 to 20 Belmont were built between 1768 and 1773. The structure features a rough limestone ashlar retaining wall with freestone coping and plain piers that support wrought iron spiked railings, along with Pennant stone paving. The pavement is approximately 110 meters long and 3 meters high opposite No. 13 Belmont. It rises gradually from three steps at the right end, levels out to the left of center, and meets the rising Lansdown Hill without steps at the left end. There are steps with wrought iron railings leading down to the road in front of Nos. 6 and 7, as well as a 20th-century ramp in front of No. 9. The retaining wall includes various doors and windows. This structure is a notable example of its type, showcasing the effective use of contrasting local building stones, which is a characteristic feature of Bath.
