Description
This early 19th-century retaining wall, railings, and steps provide a frontage for numbers 24 to 30 Church Street, Weston. The retaining wall, constructed of limestone rubble and freestone, runs approximately 40 metres along the High Street and reaches a height of 3 metres. It forms the southern boundary of the gardens belonging to those properties.
A flight of pennant stone public steps is located to the left of the wall's centre, flanked by ashlar piers; the right-hand pier features a cornice and block cap. The wall in front of number 28 exhibits banded rustication, a cornice, a frieze, and a blocking course above a tall railing gate, leading to private steps. A small planked door is present in the wall belonging to number 30. Above the steps and at the north side of the gardens along Church Street, low rubble stone walls stand where railings once stood, some with swept coping. To the west of the steps, there are two mid-19th-century cast iron lamp standards.
