Description
The pavement and railings in front of Nos 13-18 on George Street are a raised pavement that extends approximately 80 meters eastward from Gay Street. This feature likely dates from the 18th century, while the railings are from the late 19th century.
The materials used include pennant stone paving and a rough limestone ashlar revetment wall, with the railings made of cast iron. At the western end, the revetment wall includes entrances to the basements of the buildings above, with a 4-meter platform on a pyramidal double flight of stone steps that rise to about 2.5 meters at the center. The heavy cast iron railings have interlaced "Romanesque" semicircular tops and pierced circles at their bases, resembling those found in Vineyards. At the eastern end, facing Edgar Buildings, there are six steps arranged in a tight concave curve that meet the railings.
