Description

Three houses, dating to the late 18th century (OS records indicate construction before 1776), and later altered in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar with double-pitched slate mansard roofs, hipped to the right, featuring dormers and moulded stacks rising from the coped party walls. The plan is double depth.

The three-storey houses with basements have a continuous coped parapet and a modillion cornice that curves at the right-hand corner of number 18. Upper floor windows are surrounded by moulded architraves. The second floor windows have six panes, while the first floor windows contain six over nine panes, with cornices, lowered sills, and tall balconettes. Ground floor windows have six panes and splayed reveals. Number 16 has a three-window facade and a recessed, 20th-century six-panel door within a pedimented, moulded architrave to the left. Number 17 is similar with an 18th-century six-panel door to the right. Number 18 has a four-window range, with one window facing the street, two to the right return, and one to the curved corner, all matching the style of the terrace. The ground floor windows that flank the door on number 18 are six over nine panes. A mid-19th century half-glazed door and overlight to the corner has a curved cornice supported by panelled pilasters with moulded caps. A 1990s fascia spans both facades.

Interior inspection, carried out by Bath Council in the 1980s, revealed stairs with a decorative element on the balusters and Doric newels at numbers 17 and 18. Number 16 contains a fine early Victorian marble fireplace on the ground floor, and two original first-floor rooms were combined, retaining an original fireplace on the party wall with number 17. Number 18 was initially listed on August 11, 1972, and was later occupied by Smith & Bottrill, watch, clock, and jewellery repairers, around 1987.
