Description
Two former houses, dating from the mid-18th century, are now incorporated into a public house and shop. The buildings are located on the north side of George Street. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with double-pitched hipped slate mansard roofs, featuring ridges running at right angles to the street and stacks to the rear. The building presents a symmetrical five-window range over three storeys, an attic, and a basement. A returned coped parapet and cornice top the facade, while the second floor has moulded architraves and plate glass sash windows. The first floor features two/two-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars. The central three bays project slightly and are topped by a pediment. Number 15, on the left, has a two-window range and a sphinx to the left-hand quoin. The original entrance is now on the left return. Number 15A has paired windows in the dormer, three windows in total, with the second-floor windows having painted architraves, except for the central one which is blind. The central entrance features a six-panel door and overlight set within a painted stone doorcase with Tuscan engaged columns and a pediment. To the right, a 1927 shop, designed by Williams and Warrell, is flanked by pilasters with recessed panels, and the central door is set back. The interiors have not been inspected. Number 15A was added to the list on 11th August 1972.
