Description

The raised pavement and railings in front of Beaufort East, located on the north side, date from the late 18th century. The pavement is made of Pennant sandstone, with limestone rough ashlar revetment walls, although there is concrete breeze block at No. 14. The pavement gradually rises from the center of Beaufort East and reaches approximately 1.5 meters in height in front of Nos. 13, 14, and 15, which have flights of steps leading up to them. The wrought iron railings at the steps of No. 15, located at the far right, continue to enclose the end of the terrace facing Beaufort Place. Additionally, there is a cast iron coalhole cover with five circular glass panes, marked with "Hayward Brass 187-187 Union Street, Borough. March 16th 1854." Beaufort East is noted on a map from around 1794 and is one of several raised pavements in Bath that showcase the local stone and the city's commitment to creating visually appealing and functional pedestrian routes.
