Description
No. 18 Beaufort West is a house that was formerly a pub, located at the corner of Beaufort Place and St Saviours Road, with its entrance on Beaufort Place. It was built around 1818 and has a 20th-century extension on the left. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a slate mansard roof with a moulded ridge stack.
The house is two storeys high and has a two-window front. It has a returned coped parapet and cornice. The entrance facade includes six-over-six pane sash windows on the first floor, a semicircular arched recess to the right of centre, and an oculus with radial glazing bars above a garage door on the left. There is also a six-panel door that is glazed at the top, and to the right, a small high three-pane shop window with a small cornice supported by consoles.
On the right side facing St Saviours Road, the building features a stepped parapet and two eight-over-eight pane sash windows on each floor. The first-floor windows have segmental plan cast iron balconettes with lead ornaments, while the ground floor left window has horns.
Although the interior has not been inspected, records from the Bath Preservation Trust indicate the presence of some six-panel doors and reeded plasterwork. Historically, this building was known as 'The Queen' pub from around 1830 to 1920 and was later referred to as Worcester Cottage.
