Description

The walls, piers, gates, railings, and war memorial of the Church of St Saviour were built around 1832 by John Pinch the Younger. Constructed from limestone ashlar and wrought iron, the low thick walls feature double-chamfered coping and spearhead railings that extend in seven stages, each approximately 7 meters long, along Wallace Road to the east and Holland Road to the west. In the center of the west side, opposite the west door, there are double gates with long and short railings topped with a scrolled overthrow that includes a lamp.

At each end of the south side, which is about 65 meters long along St Saviour's Road, there are pairs of octagonal piers with gabled buttresses, each adorned with trefoil-head panels on every facet and topped with an octagonal slab, likely intended for a lamp. Similar piers are found at the north end of each wall. The corners feature tall double gates with long and short spearhead rails and pointed arches in the upper halves. The low walls step inward to flank wide flights of nine steps. This architectural ensemble significantly enhances the picturesque appearance of St Saviour's, an exceptional Late Georgian Gothic church.

Set behind the wall in the center of the church is a war memorial from 1920, which consists of a hammered granite cross on a square base, featuring a bronze inscription panel that lists the parish casualties.
