Description
House, now flats. Circa 1775 (lease dated circa 1774), converted in the 20th century. Probably designed by Thomas Warr Atwood; developed by The Corporation of Bath and Richard Atwood.
The building is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front and right side, enclosed by adjoining buildings to the rear. It has a double pile parapeted mansard roof, hipped to the rear right, with artificial slate covering the front and rear and concrete tile to the rear slope of the front roof. A coped party wall to the left features a small ashlar stack with early clay pots on the front slope of the front roof, shared with No. 23 Bennett Street. The right side has a coped gable wall with an ashlar stack to the front roof, and an ashlar stack to the rear, back-to-back with the stack of No. 7 Oxford Row adjoining.
The house occupies the junction of Bennett Street and Oxford Row (Lansdown Road), with the main front facing Bennett Street and a secondary front to Oxford Row, where the entrance is located. The staircase is situated to the rear left.
The Bennett Street front is three storeys with attic and basement, and three windows wide. The first floor features three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices, with lowered moulded stone sills set on cut-down console brackets bearing wrought iron balconettes. The second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. The ground floor has three plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills, and the basement has three plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills. Two single dormers with plate glass sashes light the attic. A band course runs over the ground floor with incised lettering reading "BENNETT-STREET" to the right. A modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet complete the elevation.
The Oxford Row front is three storeys with attic and basement, and four windows wide. The first floor has two plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices and lowered stone sills with wrought iron balconettes to the right, with two similar blind windows without lowered sills to the left. The second floor has two plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills to the right, and two similar windows to the left. The ground floor has a plate glass horned sash in splayed reveal with stone sill to the right, two similar blind windows with plain reveals to the left, and at centre right a 6-panel door with flush beaded, fielded and glazed panels and a cast iron wreath knocker. Above the door is a simple fanlight with a fluted timber impost band continued around the beaded reveal to meet heavy console brackets of the doorcase on flat pilasters, with supporting brackets forming a hood over. The basement has two plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with continuous stone sill to the right, two 20th-century six-panel doors under a crossover to the centre and left, limestone area steps with pennant treads and a 20th-century handrail. The attic has two small plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with continuous stone sill in the gable wall to the right. A band course runs over the ground floor with incised lettering reading "OXFORD-ROW" to the left, and a modillion eaves cornice continues from the Bennett Street elevation.
The interior was not inspected during the survey.
Attached wrought iron railings with a lifting section and gate featuring shaped heads are mounted on limestone bases.
