Description
Cuckfield Hospital Administration Block was originally built as a workhouse in 1843 by H W Parker, who was an Assistant Poor Law Commissioner. The building is designed in a classical style, with an additional four bays added slightly later that match the original design. It is constructed of red brick with grey headers, featuring a chequer work pattern and sandstone dressings, topped with a slate roof on the front elevation. The side elevation is slate hung, while the rear is made of plain brown brickwork. The building stands three storeys high and has 22 bays. The three central window bays and the two end bays project, featuring quoins, pediments, modillion cornices, and oculi above. There is a modillion eaves cornice. Most of the windows are later 19th-century casements, except for the original central three bays, which have 12-light sash windows, and the extension, which has 16-light sash windows. Throughout the building, there are gauged brick heads. The central portion has two stuccoed pedimented doorcases with sidelights on either side, although the right-hand doorcase has been converted into a window.
