Description
Barclays Bank and Down House, located at 40 and 42 Steyning High Street, is a building that likely originated as two separate houses in the 18th century. It is two storeys high and features five windows, constructed of red brick with a parapet and a tiled roof. The first floor retains its original glazing bars. Nyewood House includes a small 19th-century butcher's shop window, which has a large hood that projects halfway across the pavement and is topped with a slated canopy. To the south of this window, there is an original doorway with a pediment, a rectangular fanlight, and a door made of six fielded panels. Down House has a similar modern doorway, while Barclays Bank features a wider version and a modern bow window positioned between the two. Additionally, there is a carriage archway to the northwest, originally part of number 44, which has double doors set on heavy wooden gate-posts, with a brick section above it. A brick mounting-block is located in front of this archway.
