Description
The Stone House is a Grade II* listed building located on the south-west side of Steyning High Street. Originally constructed in the 15th century, it was formed from two buildings arranged in an L-shape but is now a single house. The north-east wing was initially a mint and later served as a prison. This section has two storeys and a semi-basement that housed the cells. The ground floor is faced with flints, featuring long and short stone quoins, stone jambs, and dripmoulds above the windows. The first floor is timber-framed with close-studding and red brick infilling, overhanging on the north-east front. It has horizontally-sliding sash windows and a gable above. A chimney breast made of flint and brick is present on the Newham Lane front, while there is a lower extension at the back.
The south-east wing dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and consists of two storeys with three windows. It is constructed of painted brick and features a modillion eaves cornice and a tiled roof. The first floor has horizontally-sliding sash windows, and the ground floor has double-hung sash windows with intact glazing bars. The entrance doorway is adorned with pilasters and a pediment.
