Description
Fir Tree Cottage is a probable late 17th century timber-framed house located on the east side of London Road. The building has two storeys and runs east to west, featuring a hipped roof at the west end. The western part of the roof is tiled, while the rest is covered with Welsh slates. There are three brick chimneys on the structure. The south front has been refaced in stucco on the ground floor, with the first floor tile hung. The windows are wooden casements, some of which have modern leaded panes. The north front reveals partly exposed timber framing on the eastern half, while the western half is brick faced but painted to imitate timber framing. The thinness of the structural timbers suggests a construction date no earlier than around 1700. The cottage is marked as 'Crawley Workhouse' on a Tithe Map from around 1840.
