Description
Number 85, known as Brewery Shades Inn, and Number 87 are two adjoining buildings located on the east side of High Street. The core of the structure dates back to the 15th century and originally functioned as a hall-house with two bays. It underwent alterations in the 17th century when a floor and chimney were added, along with two gables facing the street. Further modifications occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The buildings are two storeys high, with the ground floor finished in stucco and the first floor featuring modern tile-hanging. The roof is tiled and has three gables on the High Street elevation and two on the side elevation. Most of the windows are modern casements, and there are contemporary shopfronts.
The main north and south range is timber-framed, showcasing a large cambered tie-beam supported by in-curving uprights. This beam holds a short King-post, which is square in section and has a chamfered back and a moulded cap. This cap supports a collar-beam and collar-purlins, with the southern purlin being cut away. The timber framing of the north wall of the hall is also visible from the inside. The Public Bar features exposed square framing, including an arch.
