Description
The Old Punchbowl is an early 15th century timber-framed hall-house of Wealden type, featuring five bays in total, with the hall comprising two bays. The building stands two storeys high, with timber framing and plaster infilling, while the ground floor is constructed of brick on a stone base. It has an old tiled roof that is hipped at the south end and includes a gablet. An external brick chimney stack is located to the north, which has a semi-circular projection that contains a bread oven. There are four renewed casement windows. The upper storeys at both the north and south ends are jettied, with their wall plates extending beyond the middle section and supported by curved braces.
Inside, the hall features an open timber roof with a cambered tie-beam that carries a plain king-post, which supports a collar and a central purlin. A chimney and floor were inserted in the 16th century and extended northward by one bay within 100 years of the original construction, creating ground and first floor rooms. The first floor oversails to the south and is underbuilt in brick, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. There are modern back additions to the east.
Historically, the building was once a farmhouse known as The Mitchells.
