Description

Bishop Otter Memorial College, built in 1849-50, was designed by J Butler as a Church of England training college for male teachers, and its architecture reflects collegiate and monastic influences. The building is constructed of stone with coursed detailing and slate roofs, displaying some French Medieval architectural influences.

The south front features a cloister walk on the ground floor, extending across nine bays. Each bay has wide, unglazed openings with decorative tracery, and single-light windows above. A central octagonal bell-cote with a weathervane rises from the slate roof. A prominent oriel window with a cartouche bearing arms and foliated decoration sits above a four-centred arched doorway with an inscribed plaque. Stringcourses mark the levels above the ground and first floors, topped by a parapet. The west front is two storeys high with attics, again featuring stone coursed detailing and a slate gabled roof with a parapet. The southernmost three bays have a higher frontage, with windows of two and three lights set in square frames with decorative spandrels and dripstones. A pointed gable rises above the first storey. A three-sided canted bay projects through both stories in the third bay from the south. An east-west wing projects forward at the northern end, featuring a lower frontage and a higher tiled roof.

An internal courtyard is created by the arrangement of the south, west and north wings. The chapel, originally a place of worship, is now a library and extends eastwards, with a large north-south wing and windows with curvilinear tracery on its south front.
