Description
The Union Church Garden Walls and Piers form part of the garden to the north of the former Congregational Chapel, built between 1836 and 1838. The chapel was designed by Robert Abraham of Keppell Street, Russell Square, London. The north elevation is constructed from knapped and dressed flint, with galleting, and features Pulborough stone dressings, stringcourses, and buttresses. The remaining elevations are of knapped flint, without galleting, with red and grey brick dressings, ashlar sills, and ashlar corbels to the eaves. It has a pitched slate roof. The north elevation is three bays wide and features a planked double door within a round arch, embellished with colonnettes and cushion capitals. Above this are three similar windows on the first floor, and attic windows framed by continuous roll moulding. The garden to the north is enclosed by walls built of beach flint, with red brick dressings and Pulborough stone coping. Two Pulborough stone piers mark the north ends of the walls, featuring stringcourses three-quarters of the way up, coved cornices, and recessed square panels with plain shields in low relief.
