Description

Rustington Convalescent Home is a building constructed in 1897 by F Wheeler in a neo-Caroline style. It features brown brick with red dressings and some stone detailing, topped with a slate hipped roof that includes single and paired segment-headed dormers. The building is two storeys high with attics, and has a one-storey and attic wing to the east.

At the center, there is a square four-storey tower with stone dressings, topped by a clock stage and an octagonal open cupola. The main block has 13 bays, with sash windows arranged in pairs, and half-hipped aprons below the glazing bars only in the broken upper leaves. The tower has a central stone segmental pedimented entrance.

The east wing has three bays, with windows closely spaced in the center and a balcony over the ground floor. The west wing also has three bays and features a projecting pediment gable, closely spaced windows in the center, and a two-storey octagonal corner turret with an octagonal conical roof at the south-west corner. The west front has three bays with a turret at the south-west corner, a central one-bar projection with a pediment above, and a stone segmental-pedimented entrance.

Inside, there is a contemporary wooden five-flight rectangular open well staircase with a ramped handrail, closed strings, and spiral balusters. The stairwell is illuminated by decorative stained glass in an octagonal bay.
