Description

The Bridge Gates at Arundel Castle, built in the mid-19th century, are located on the north side of Mill Road. Prior to the construction of Mill Road around 1850, the Bridge Gates were situated outside the castle grounds, separated by Mill Lane, which was closed when the road was built. The gates are constructed from knapped flint with lower courses, quoins, dressings, and battered coping made of Pulborough stone, as well as Pulborough stone chimneys.

The structure features two circular bastions with battered lower courses and crenellated parapets flanking the main gateway. The east bastion is one storey high, while the remainder is two storeys. The east bastion includes three pointed lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars, along with one blind arrow slit in the east re-entrant angle. It has been extended to the east, with no windows except for one oblong lancet with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars in the east elevation of the extruded corner. An octagonal chimney sits on a square base with original spurs and battered upper courses.

The west bastion features three pointed lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars on the ground floor, and two on the first floor. It has been extended to the west, showcasing five oblong lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars on the ground floor, and three on the first floor. The parapet steps down to the level of the adjoining wall at the west end, with a stringcourse above the first floor and two oblong chimneys with battered upper courses.

The main gateway comprises a planked double door with ornamental iron hinges, set within a pointed archway that has three chimneys and a hood mould. This hood mould continues west as a stringcourse above another planked door with ornamental iron hinges in a pointed arch with chamfered embrasures and a hood mould. Above the doors are two plain square ashlar panels and one oblong lancet with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars. The plain parapet features four arrow slits.
