Description

A late 18th-century town house, originally belonging to Lord Zouche of Parham Park. The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar detailing for the stringcourse to the first floor, the cornice, and the coping of the parapet. It has a mansard roof covered in tiles, with brick blocking courses at the gable ends and yellow brick chimneys. The building extends over three storeys and has attics. A parapet runs along the cornice, with balustrades inserted above each bay of the six bays. The ground floor features a blind round-arched arcade with an ashlar stringcourse at the level of the arches. Modern windows and doors have been inserted. The first and second floors have six ranges of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars.

The interior includes a cantilevered staircase within an oval stairhall, which is adorned with guilloche moulding around the ceiling cornice. A rectangular room on the first floor is notable for its segmental north wall and two semi-circular niches flanking the chimneypiece. The dado features a guilloche pattern and rosettes, while the entablature has a moulded architrave and cornice, and a frieze with rosettes. A doorcase is characterized by a shouldered architrave, pulvinated frieze, dentilled cornice resting on beaded consoles, which themselves are supported by acanthus corbels. The eight-panelled door has brass urn handles and decorated brass hinges, and the reveals are panelled. The wooden chimneypiece features beaded consoles, a frieze of fluting and rosettes, and an urn. A cove is present at the moulded cornice. Three windows are set within rectangular niches, complete with panelled shutters.

The building forms a group with numbers 51 to 67 (odd) on High Street.
