Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church built in 1910 by architect W.D. Caröe. It features knapped flint with random stone blocks and stone dressings, topped with a plain tiled roof that has a wood-shingled bell turret and a broach spire at the west end. The church has a cruciform plan, comprising a nave with aisles, transepts, and a chancel, along with a 20th-century vestry and church hall located at the northeast corner. The west end includes a narthex with two doors set in deep reveals, while most windows are topped with four-centred hoods and panelled tracery. The east window is semicircular and filled with quadrofoil tracery. A foundation stone from 1910, inscribed with the architect's name, is located in a buttress at the east end.
Inside, the church features a five-bay nave arcade supported by piers of cruciform section, with crenellations and trefoil carvings at the top of the arcade. The nave has a barrel vault, while the aisles are stone vaulted, and the north chancel chapel and chancel have panelled vaults. Early 20th-century fittings in the chancel include a reredos, double sedilia with rib vaults in the niches, and an ogee-arched piscina on the south chancel wall. A hexagonal stone font is also present.
