Description

The Byfleet War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1924, designed by architect Gerald Warren and built by Walter George Tarrant. Additional inscriptions were added in 1974 following the Second World War.

Constructed from red brick with Portland stone dressings and bronze plaques, the memorial is located at the corner of High Road and Chertsey Road. It is designed as a cenotaph, honoring the Fallen of Byfleet, many of whose remains are elsewhere. The memorial features a rectangular plan with a stone base, a brick plinth topped with stone coping, and a main shaft made of red brick, which is topped by several stepped ashlar courses resembling a tomb.

On the west side of the monument, there is a large bronze plaque inscribed with: "1914/ 1918/ THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ THE PARISH OF BYFLEET/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ NOT GRUDGINGLY OR OF NECESSITY/ BUT THAT TRUTH AND JUSTICE MIGHT PREVAIL/ (NAMES)/ WE GRATEFULLY HONOUR AND REMEMBER THESE NAMES." Beneath this plaque, at the foot of the monument, is an ashlar tablet with a moulded top, featuring an incised inscription on a fielded panel: "THE MEN OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE/ WHO WERE KILLED IN ACTION OR/ DIED OF WOUNDS DURING THE/ GREAT WAR NUMBERED 908,371." Additionally, two small bronze plaques on either side of the main plaque are inscribed with the dates 1939 and 1945, along with the names of 14 individuals who died during the Second World War.
