Description
The crematory and columbarium of Woking Crematorium was built in 1879. It features red brick construction with stone dressings and plain tiled roofs. The building has a rectangular plan and is located to the south of the Chapel. It is two stories tall and four bays long, with alternating lancet windows and buttresses. There are double board doors to the right of the center, while the former entrance on the left side has been converted into a shrine of remembrance.
Inside, the columbarium contains ashes and urns set within partition walls and has a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Both the columbarium and the crematory are notable as the first of their kind in the country, with the first legal cremation in Great Britain occurring on 26 March 1885 at Woking.
