Description
St John's War Memorial is located on a slightly elevated mound within the churchyard of St John the Baptist Church. The memorial stands approximately 7 meters high and features a Celtic-style wheel cross made of Portland stone, set on a four-sided shaft that transitions to a circular shape at its base. The east face of the shaft is adorned with Celtic tracery and a relief of the Sword of Sacrifice, while the lower circular section bears a Celtic-style inscription that reads: DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI.
The shaft is mounted on a two-stage square plinth, which in turn rests on a four-stepped octagonal base. The inscription on the east face of the upper plinth states: TO THE/ GLORY OF GOD/AND IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/1914-1918. The lower plinth features the inscription: GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN/ LAY DOWN/ HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. The remaining three faces of the plinth list the names of 106 men from the parish of St John’s who lost their lives during the war.
