Description
Buffbeards is a 16th century house that has undergone alterations and additions. The ground floor is constructed of rubble stonework with red brick dressings, while the first floor features timber framing that is now tile hung. The building has two storeys and three windows, topped by a very high pitched tiled roof. At the south end, there is a crow-stepped projecting chimney. The house also has a modern porch and a projecting gabled bay, along with modern casement windows.
Inside, there is much exposed framing, including jowled posts and a queen-strut and windbrace roof with clasped purlins and diminishing principals. The rafters have been renewed, and windbraces have been removed in the central bay. To the right, the framing for a smoke bay remains, complete with its wattle-and-daub filling and significant smoke blackening. Carpenters' marks can be seen on the rafters. A staircase has been added at the back, but there is still a trace of the old staircase near the door.
