Description

Howicks is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with 20th-century extensions. The main part of the house has a timber frame, with whitewashed brick visible at lower levels and whitewashed render above, exposing the main posts. A 20th-century timber-framed range sits to the right, with brick infill. The roofs are tiled and gabled on the main house, and lower with a half-hip over the right-hand range. The layout is L-shaped, with a wing projecting to the right, and the original front now facing the back.

The main range is two storeys and has an attic to the left. The wing is one storey high with an attic. A prominent triple stack with corbelling rises from the ridge of the main house's roof, slightly right of centre, and a very tall corbelled stack is on the ridge of the wing. Further stacks are located on the right-hand side.

The left-hand section of the main range has four framed bays and a gabled dormer with diamond-pane glazing. There are four windows on the first floor, including a small square window positioned above the door, to the right of centre. The ground floor has three windows, with the outer windows having cambered heads. A gabled brick porch with a planked door and elliptical fanlight is located to the right of centre. A tile-hung gable and attic window are on the left-hand return front, along with a square bay window on the ground floor.

The right-hand range is one storey high with an attic, and has two gabled dormers under through-eaves, plus a pentice. There is one first-floor window under the eaves. The range has four framed bays, including a chimney bay, and tension bracing to the ends on the first floor. There are three diamond-pane windows on the ground floor, and a panelled door is situated to the right of centre, beneath a stack.
